Please help!

Dear Volunteers,

We are asking for your help to look for an adult female seal, identified as K-13 who has swallowed an ulua fish hook and is currently trailing 100 foot of fishing line. She has 2 red rear flipper tags 5AA and 5AB, a cookie cutter scar (round black scar) on her mid-back and mid belly (more to the right side) and she is about 7 feet long. She was spotted on the beach yesterday in Ha'ena and was also seen in the water at Tunnel's reef by a diver yesterday evening at 6 p.m. He noticed her gagging and did not see the fish hook, so we are concerned that she may have swallowed it. DO NOT PULL ON THE FISHLINE AS IT WILL INJURE HER FURTHER. Please keep an eye out for her and call Dr. Mimi Olry at 651-7668 immediately if you spot her. We need to find her as soon as possible. She could haul out on any beach from Ke'e (Ha'ena) all the way to Ahukini Pier (Lihue). Mahalo for all your help. We will keep you posted on any current news.

~

Hawaiian Travel|Hawaiian Fun Food

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g4CejEiuQ0c/Rl4PQVddOzI/AAAAAAAABFM/FDrhRAusEeQ/s320/302abp%232.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070507003778775858" />

Whatever ya do, unless you have extreme athletes feet or something, don't wear shoes and socks, that is a dead giveaway that you are from the midwest and your aim it to fit in right?

Facts About Hawaii -Traveling to Hawaii? "Mahalo For Removing Your Shoes!"

A real no no in Hawaii! Never ever go into someone's home in Hawaii wearing your shoes! I don't care if they have dirt floors.. It is a matter of respect and honor.

One thing that we all hope for when we travel is that we don't 'look' like a tourist, at least I do. In Hawaii the idea is to 'dress down', especially in the shoe department.

It is a tradition in many cultures to not enter someone's home with your shoes on. This is the case in Hawaii as well. Locals usually just wear flip flops or thongs.. commonly called slippers or slippas in Hawaii, one reason being they are easy to take off.

Unless you plan to hike or dine out in a posh restaurant in Hawaii...

wear slippas!

Slippas are easy to remove when and if you meet up with a Hawaii resident and are invited to their home for a little 'Ono Grinds' (yummy food) and some 'Wala' au' (talk story another term used in Hawaii that means to have the gift of gab with each other, share adventures and thoughts).

NEVER, ever, enter someone's home in Hawaii without removing your shoes first, not even if they have dirt floors. Ya just wouldn't do that out of respect for their home and person. Normally you will see a whole slew of shoes and slippas outside the door of Hawaiian residents. It is pretty darn cute.

Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian), for removing your shoes is often posted on a lot of Hawaii residents homes just outside their front door. Craftspeople wisely take advantage of this opportunity by making signs out of tiles or wood and other materials. Plaques saying "Mahalo For Removing Your Shoes" are for sale all over the Hawaiian Islands.

You can find "Locals" or "Surfahs" brand names for the most hip, yet cheap (under $5.00 normally) at a lot of grocery stores even, all over Hawaii. Ya might want to go ahead and wait till you arrive to purchase what the locals wear, yeah? Make your first stop at the local grocery store or quick stop.. too funny huh?

Aloha! A word that can never be said too much in Hawaii.

http://www.squidoo.com/hawaiianartprints/

ABOUT Kathy Ostman-Magnusen

I paint and sculpt female fantasy art and map faery tale adventures. Yay!

To see photos of my progress check out the blog OK?

http://artistwatch.blogspot.com/

This is a Hawaiiana Series in honor of Merry Monarch Fest.

This is my latest blurb from that blog:

This is ... I 'think' going to be my favorite when done.(image on my blog) It is so far a toss up between this one and one other. I tend to like more edgy paintings rather than things that include landscapes so that is partly why. This is a 30x40 canvas. I LOVE doing giant faces for impact. This is just the first session of face tones, I will probably have at least couple more. The orchids will be done once I am pretty sure of the face.

Laying down really dark colors on a face like this is VERY uncomfortable at first. I fight myself over it. I know it is the right thing to do so I just say to myself... 'do it or you are going to be sorry because it will just have to be repainted to achieve what could have been done in the first place.

I lay down the colors from dark to light. I look for colors. I search out greens, especially. If you look long enough you will see them in the face tones.

Each one of the paintings I will be posting now will be of their first facial tone session. I do not walk away from it or let it dry, I want to be able to blend the colors. I am VERY careful not to muddy the work. This is another good reason for painting so many works at the same time. I can acknowledge that something is finished easier, not overwork. I do not think I will ever paint less than 10 at a time because of this. I also have less nightmares. Painting one at a time keeps me up at night. I can't think of anything else. With 10 going at once small errors are not such a big deal. I know I will get back to them and things will be fine.

I want to add something about studio space. I have been thinking about that. I have done full series in a 500 sq.-ft. duplex before. I painted my Victorian Series in that kitchen. You can imagine how small the kitchen was if the whole place was 500 sq. ft. I will do just about anything to stay by the beach!
I have had large spaces and small spaces... NO EXCUSES not to paint...EVER!

ART IN ACTION BLOG for my new series and "One Woman Show':

"Ala o Pele"

April 2,2007

Wailoa Center

State Building

Hilo, Hawaii

The blog I have created showing the progress of this series is at:

Artist Watch "Ala o Pele"

http://artistwatch.blogspot.com/

I think it would be great if more artists shared art in action... yeah?

Blessings and Aloha to you all!

Kathy

Kathy Ostman-Magnusen

Free Art Gifts:

http://www.kathysart.com/

ART IN THE IRON WORKS

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g4CejEiuQ0c/RdIeL6e7YhI/AAAAAAAAAV4/z6xz0UfH_rA/s320/312.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031116923752636946" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g4CejEiuQ0c/RdIeGKe7YgI/AAAAAAAAAVw/-eRxL9xrMLU/s320/170.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031116824968389122" />
"Hilo Port"
Rod Cameron

ART IN THE IRON WORKS
1266 Kamehameha Ave.
Hilo, HI 96721
808-935-2300

What’s Happening At - ART IN THE IRON WORKS
Sponsored in part by Hilo Art & Glass Supply
Hilo Art & Glass Supply Collaborates with Art in the Ironworks
Aloha friends of the ironworks! CW Dickey bestowed upon Hawai`i a remarkably rich architectural heritage. As the long list of his designs would attest, he is noteworthy by any criteria: variety, quantity, quality. His legacy includes many of the buildings which, today, are considered among Hawai`i’s best architecture.

Located at the confluence of the Wialoa River and picturesque Hilo Bay, the building is steeped in local history. Having survived 2 major tsunami’s, it was at one time used as an infirmary for the tsunami victims. The building was designed as an office for the Hilo Iron Works that was established to build the railroad for the booming sugar cane industry. The outlying buildings were used as a Pinapple cannery.

Art in The Iron works gallery opened in this historic building on April 18th, 2004. Since it’s inception it has featured 9 major exhibits of local artists. Our goal is to promote beauty in the world and bring communities together using the arts as our language.

Contact:

Art in the Iron Works
1266 Kamehameha Ave
Hilo, Hawaii 96720

808- 935-2300

Artist's:

Beverly Jackson, Bob Dittbenner, David Hubbard, Elfie Wilkins, Elizabeth Miller, Eve Furchgott , Henry Bianchini, Hope Northway, Laura McDonnell, Margaret Godfrey

PRESENT EXHIBIT: Raymond Clement, Reva Collins, Rod Cameron, Suzy Papanikolas, William P. Thanks Lamont!

Here is some info about Aloha Outpost and Puna Nation:

Puna Nation:

New! PUNA AFTER DARK
Mixing classic Hip Hop, R&B and Rap and Dance, PAD is the nighttime beat of Pahoa. Get the head bobbin’ with us here in the café or anywhere else in the world This is your daddy’s old school. (Parental Advisory is in effect as lyrics in some selections played can be offensive.

ORIGIN OF THE MUSIC
After moving here three years ago, I quickly found out there was no radio station to suit my taste. Since I have DJ experience and do voice-overs, I went to the local radio station to peddle my wares. After hearing nothing I decided to start my own. We play lounge and club music, nothing too strong, just something to tap your fingers and toes to, or to hear in the background as you sip one of our beverages and chill here in the Café. If you listen to us through the internet, relax, close your eyes and imagine that you are here in the groove with us.

DJ Big Chill can be reached at outpostradio@hotmail.com

Aloha Outpost:

The Aloha Outpost is part tomorrow, part yesterday and all of each day. People have described it as “the sandwich joint,” “the information and communication hub”, “friendliest place in town” and “coffeehouse of tomorrow”. Established in 2002, the Outpost now is one of the largest businesses in Pahoa, and still provides that “small coffee shop” feel. Whether you are a visitor or resident, you’ll get the same down home welcome.

If you come to the Big Island of Hawaii and migrate to the Hilo side,
the 25 minute drive to the Outpost is a must!

The origin of the name “outpost” is from LaMont’s former days as a training and development manager for Restaurants Unlimited. “When I was traveling around the country helping open new restaurants “ LaMont explains, “ I would call the home office back in Seattle and say I was reporting from Outpost and use whatever unit number the store was. I guess it’s also a reference to all those westerns I watched as a kid as well. After I thought about it, I also remembered the Stuckey’s Restaurants that were the highlight of many road trips. You would find all kinds of interesting things there.”

“The aloha was somewhat an obvious call,” LaMont also explains. “You have to give back to the island.”

ORIGIN OF THE OUTPOST

When did it begin?

I suppose it began almost sub-consciously at my job as a corporate cog in Seattle.

I’m not a cog. Walking around talking with people, downloading music and enjoying good company doesn’t go hand in hand with productivity and a fear for your job downsizing. So I was laid off. Given the boot. Downsized. Vertically integrated. The “returning from Christmas vacation jammie.”
Don’t let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

After enjoying almost a year of primarily being a stay home dad, watching around the clock Cleveland and Ohio State sports, and part time career transition consulting (ironic, huh?), we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. Little did I realize I had stumbled into the mother lode of laid back lifestyles. I had found my place in the sun. I have no qualms with those who enjoy climbing the ladder of success in the office, but I march to the beat of a different drum. As “J.B.”, the poet laureate of the donut shop back’ in Seattle would say,
“If ya don’t like the song I’m singing, go sing your own.”

After being in Pahoa for about six months, I was up one night in front of my computer when the idea hit me to open an internet café. I don’t know where the idea came from, because I had never been to an internet café, nor talked to anyone who had. I was browsing the internet and listening to music, relaxin’ and thought “Why not?” I was pretty excited and almost woke my wife to tell her, but I figured she would think it was a far fetched idea and be annoyed. So I sprung it on her the next morning. Early, because when I have an idea I run with it. Run till the pants fall down, so to speak. She loved the idea, and later that day I rented the first office space I could find. It was about 180 sq. ft., in a back alley of town. From my window I had a spectacular view of most of the pharmaceutical transactions as well as to a tree that served as a public bathroom. There was no air conditioning, and underneath my window was the smoker for the barbeque joint next door. My first week I made about $16. The days were long, and the doubts were strong.

And still the Outpost grew.

After 8 months we moved to our site on the main drag in Pahoa. The initial location in the Pahoa marketplace was delayed, so we rented a two story building slightly tucked away with a patio and balcony. The Outpost continued to evolve, becoming both a casual eating and meeting spot, as well as a place to take care of business needs. We have been fortunate to have been voted the best internet café on the island for the last two years. My wife joined me working at the Café full time, as well as my grandmother who serves as the area’s most efficient notary. My father moved here from Ohio and is our handy man (you don’t want to let a wash rag go down the sink drain — you will surely hear about it.)

We are now in the process of moving into the new Pahoa Marketplace. In addition to expanding our current services, we will be adding more space for our internet radio station, poetry readings, and live music. We are also looking at potential spots for an additional Aloha Outpost. The Aloha Outpost “Ohana” consists of the many residents of Puna who have walked through our doors and contributed with their personalities and conversations, the travelers who have stopped in during vacations from literally around the globe, and our friends and relatives who have invested in our company.

We look forward to the continued growth of the Aloha Outpost, and we thank you.
What a great ride it has been.

~Lamont

Aloha, Kathy

"I thought I Killed Tony. A Gecko Story"

"The Chant" oil on canvas/ gifts available with this image on my website www.kathysart.com in the gallery, entrance to the Hawaiian Legacy Gallery at the bottom of the page.

Story:
I want to start this out by saying that I have never had bugs or lizards of snakes or anything like that in my house. I am indeed one of those women who screams if I see a spider. I have never liked little crawly things and have always considered the best place for them is outside.

" Well of course!" ... I can HEAR you thinking!

OK... but with all of that said, I live in Hawaii now and the rules have changed considerably.

If you visit Hawaii and stay in a hotel it is not likely that you will come across a gecko in your room. Hotels take special care (like poison) so you will not come across these little critters with suction cups on their widespread toes. Your loss unless you visit someone's home like mine.

I have lived in Hawaii for about nine years now and I have adjusted my thinking more than I would ever have imagined possible. Spiders that I once feared like the common Wolfie Spider is minor to me now. The Wolfie is dwarfed by the Cane Spider and might I just add a scream and an, "EWWW!" here because they are indeed that huge and that awful. Let's not even mention centipedes because I have this theory that whenever I talk about them much, they show up to remind me how horrible they are. I will tell you though, that I have seen them just about 10 inches long. OK, lets not go there. You see what I mean though about the Wolfie being a minor threat in comparison?

I don't spray for geckos like the hotels do nor do I put out those cruel sticky things, that people use for rats and mice, like some of my friends, to protect their computers and stuff. I think those sticky things are inhumane and should be banned. I don't do anything at all about the some 15-20 geckos and I am just guessing here, that live inside my house. YES! I said it and admit to it, they live INSIDE my house. They chirp at night and even sometimes poop on my paintings. After nine years I am indeed used to it and that is my only excuse.

So what about Tony? Who the heck is Tony, are you wondering? You have probably figured out by now that Tony is a gecko that I have chosen to name. I not only named him but allowed him to lick my cup after my nightly hot chocolate treat. This is a terrible habit I have gotten into, that really must go. as I can feel a few extra pounds because of it. Tony loved it though and I must say that I really thought is was the cutest thing ever to see him over the edge of my cup licking away. He had the cutest little tongue.

One night I was out of things to make hot chocolate. Tony sat... humm.. or stood? Well, whatever geckos do, he was there on my bed stand waiting for his nightly treat. I felt bad for his sugar addiction and related so well. I got myself a small handful of chocolate chips and gave Tony his own. He didn't seem to like it as much as the hot chocolate but his tiny tongue did lick it for quite awhile and then off he went.

The next night I made my regular hot chocolate. No Tony. No Tony last night either. WAAA! I told my husband that maybe I killed Tony with chocolate. You aren't supposed to give it to dogs and cats but Tony was already a seasoned addict. Yet, I felt bad. Why did I give Tony that chocolate chip!? It was too concentrated I worried.

We bought a fixer upper and all the electrical sockets are off. My husband discovered poor little Tony just about an hour ago... electrocuted? I kind of hope so. I so hope it wasn't the chocolate chip. WAAA!

Bless little Tony's heart! So funny isn't it how one little creature takes on a personality like none other because we give it special care. If I ever have another gecko come to my bedside for hot chocolate I will name him Tony Two and I will never give him a chocolate chip... just in case.

Epilogue: I saw a little gecko about 3/4 inch long in the bathroom this morning. "Tony Two!" I exclaimed.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kathyshawaiianlegacy.blogspot.com/2006/11/i-thought-i-killed-tony-waaa-gecko.html' title='"I thought I Killed Tony. When I painted it, I used the pinkish tone of poi, and pulled the color up through the arm of the figure, of this old Hawaiian man. I am not sure if that is how he got his power for sure... but I rather think so. No matter where you stand in the room, not only do his eyes follow you but his head and shoulders do as well. You can test it right here on your screen. I have often put him in the entrance of our home to watch over us.
People joke about poi tasting like wallpaper paste... not true, to me anyway. I love it. I used to have it with eggs every morning. Old Hawaiian Aunties usually like their poi real sour... I tend to agree.
